While living in New York City, I began taking yoga classes to stay in shape and unwind. After connecting with yoga’s many benefits, I realized I’d discovered my life’s journey and wanted to share it with others. I began training and teaching traditional yoga. When I found out I had scoliosis, I knew there was a need to support people living with scoliosis and other back issues through the healing power of yoga.
With more than two decades of experience and multiple trainings and certifications, I’ve crafted a well-rounded, warm, upbeat, and compassionate teaching style incorporating yoga poses, breath work, and visualization. ScoliYoga offers specialized yoga classes for people with scoliosis and other back issues. Founded based on the understanding that traditional yoga classes do not work for everyone, I focus on modified practices to align, strengthen, and stretch the body—and mind—while protecting the back.
In addition to scoliosis, I work with students who have kyphosis, stenosis, herniations, lordosis, fusions, or a combination of these challenging conditions that can benefit from a yoga practice.
While helping my students regain mobility and comfort, my classes also increase focus and clarity for handling what life throws at us all.

"Judy is a very knowledgeable yoga teacher that I've been fortunate to work with for over five years. She has the ability to make adjustments to ease individual discomfort while demonstrating the postures so that everyone can participate taking into account their curves and experience. She has a joyful personality making the class a pleasant but beneficial experience. "

" I have been taking classes with Judy for a couple of years, in person and now online. I am incredibly impressed with how she is able to manage virtual online classes and be able to individualize and assist with each of us in such a personal and helpful way. Each class is carefully planned and follows specific sequences with very clear instructions. She is able to consider everyone's own personal needs and adjusts according to what works best for each of us. Judy is an excellent instructor who incorporates her extensive knowledge and experiences with kindness and compassion, which makes working with her a tremendously positive experience. Her classes are definitely beneficial to me physically, mentally and emotionally, and I have only high marks and recommendations. "

"I have had the pleasure of working with Judy for over 2 1/2 years, and she has shown me how to reduce my pain level with a specific exercise routine that I've been doing 3x weekly. Keeping up with this routine is essential to staying on top of the discomfort. Over the years she has introduced new exercises as my curvature shifted. I thought any movement in my back was impossible but it's happening. A by-product of scoliosis is kyphosis and we work on strengthening muscle which enables me to stand up straighter. Judy is very passionate about her work and it's contagious. She is upbeat and excited to see her clients improve not only their bodies but their attitude about what's possible. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking to improve their chronic back issues. "

This will depend on your commitment to the practice, and consistency is key. The first thing you will notice is your pain or discomfort level will subside. As you continue with the practice by participating in classes, your back will get stronger. This will prevent your scoliosis from worsening, and depending on your condition, can create a straighter back.
You do need to know what your scoliotic pattern is, and I can help you. We can have a complimentary consultation over Zoom so I can assess what your pattern is, as well as give you any additional insight. Get in touch to schedule one.
At a minimum, you will need a chair, a yoga belt (8' long), two foam yoga blocks, and a few throw pillows. Here is a full list of recommended props. [link to props section] Reach out if you need any more information.
